My big brother described Feb. 3/07 as the Ultimate Flames Experience. Those guys sure know how to roll out the red carpet. And the fan support...unbelievable! Thank-you Flames Fans...I'll remember that night forever.
I did my sound check around 4PM. Flame's President and CEO, Ken King, was there to greet me along with his awesome team. Very special thank-you's go out to Steve Johnston, Geordie Macleod, and Sean Kelso. You guys made my day!
Flames management told us that we were receiving 4 tickets to the game...well imagine my surprise when Mr. King upgraded us to the owners' suite after my sound check.
A few more hours later came the biggest moment in my life, and with all the inner calmness of a mouse at a cat convention, I marched out onto the ice following the honour guard. Talk about shaky knees!
Ka Kanatahk was well received by the Flames faithful. In fact, Geordie said that it was the loudest applause received for any anthem singer. That Geordie, what a charmer!
The Flames won and my record is now 7-0. After the game, Sean brought us down to wait for the players outside their dressing room where 17 players signed my Flames jersey...I didn't quite get all of them...so here's hoping for a return engagement to get the rest!
All in all it was just an incredible day and I can't thank the Calgary Flames organization enough. Hai hai
I have been asked to do some public speaking and I want to share with you an exerpt from my speech and it goes like this:
I want to tell you about my proudest accomplishment, which came to me the night I sang for the Calgary Flames when they hosted the Vancouver Canucks on February 3rd. Every time that I sang for a home team, the home team won. Well, before I sang for the Flames, my record was 6 and 0. The Calgary Flames won by the way, and my record was 7 and 0. I have sung several times for the Saddle Lake Warriors home games since that day and I am proud to say that my streak is now 12 and 1. In fact, the Warriors successfully defended as the North East Alberta Junior B Hockey Champions this spring. My first loss came in double overtime. I tell the team that my good luck works for the first overtime, after that… YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN.
Now that I think about it, I made history on February 3rd, a Saturday I’m going to remember forever. I sang the anthem for this hockey game, and not only that but I sang in Cree. I learned that this was bigger than I ever imagined. I never thought I would get so much publicity or fame. I got to see what being a celebrity was like.
On that night, right after I sung the anthem, I sighed heavily, smiled and waved to the crowd and thought, “This one is for Aboriginal youth and for Aboriginal people ALL across Canada”. It was the proudest moment of my life. My gold medal at Swimming in the Provincial trials did not compare to what I was feeling at that moment. Wow, I made history. During this whole experience I received so much support. I am so grateful for all the wonderful e-mails, phone calls of appreciation and acknowledgement from Canadians, especially from the Aboriginal community.
THANK YOU |
